What does it all mean?

Remy hair, Virgin hair, Virgin Remy Hair, 100% Human hair? What is the difference and what does it all mean? Here is a brief definition to inform our end-users!

100% Human Hair:  Simply refers to the fact that the hair extensions are not mixed with any synthetic hair or animal hair. It is donated from a human. The most popular human donors are from the East because of their resilient hair growth, reduced hair loss rate, strength of the actual hair and excellent quality of hair. Some hair is cut for traditional purposes – but most hair donors are purely voluntary. Donors from the East predominantly have a natural dark colour and to make the beautiful shades that we want for our customers the hair needs to be cold dyed or chemically processed to achieve a specific colour.

Remy Hair: Remy hair referrers to the characteristic of the cuticle of the hair. The cuticle is the outside layer of the hair shaft. It is formed from overlapping layers of cells that strengthen and protect the hair shaft. When hair extensions are defined as Remy hair it refers to the fact that these cuticles are uni-lateral, in other words – the hair follicles are all in the same direction and intact.

Virgin Hair: Virgin hair refers to hair that is cut form a single donor and hair that has not been through a chemical process. It is Remy hair – hair with full cuticle intact – that has been cut from 1 donor and that has never been altered with bleach or dyes, whether it is a chemical dye or a cold dye, also not been permed or processed in any way.

Double drawn hair: Double drawn hair undergoes an additional process during manufacturing. The shorter hairs are removed by hand and not by a machine and offers fullness same from top to bottom. It is the referred to as the hair ratio. A good ratio is 60%. A standard ratio is 40%.

The conclusion? The best human hair for hair extensions are donated from the East. Once it is cut from a single donor it is Virgin Remy Hair. As soon as it is dyed or transformed to achieve another colour the cuticle may be compromised to a certain extent. Most Tape-In Hair Extensions in South-Africa offers 100% Human, Virgin Remy hair form somewhere in the East.

It is advised that you use good quality hair products to treat your extensions with. Ask your stylist to recommend a heat protector and mask.  The hair itself can last up to 18 months, unfortunately the bonds wear and tear and the life of a set of extensions is between 8 months and a year, depending on the way it is treated.  Do not wash your hair for 2 days after installation. Hair Extensions tend to tangle – it is therefore advised that you braid your hair before going to bed. All our tape-in extensions can be re-taped.

How is the Tape-In Extensions inserted?

It is advised to apply tape-in extensions to washed hair. Do not apply conditioner to the roots of the hair on the day of the application.

Stylists are trained to divide the hair in sections. Each section is taped individually. The process includes inserting a thin strand of hair between top and bottom extensions. The strand of hair you're sandwiching needs to be very thin. This is to ensure that the adhesive tape on both extensions can stick together through the hair. It is a skilled process and that is why we only used trained stylists to insert our extensions.

Attach the bottom extension under the thin portion of hair. Take your strand of hair and lift it up a little. Remove the strip covering the adhesive on the bottom extension. Press on the bottom extension underneath the thin strand of hair you're lifting.

Secure the top extension. Take the top extension. After removing the adhesive tape covering that extension, press on top of your strand of hair. The top and bottom extension should stick together. Then press them together with pliers for a few seconds to secure them.

This process is repeated. The number of tapes inserted depends on the needs of each client. Do you insert them for volume, length or both? The result of your Tape-In Hair Extensions will depend on both the skill level of your stylist and the quality of the hair. It is a combination of both that offers and excellent result and the beautiful look you desire.
